İGA Istanbul Airport Launches Europe’s First Triple Runway Operations

On April 17, 2025, İGA Istanbul Airport became the first airport in Europe to implement the Triple Runway Operations system. This system allows simultaneous takeoff and landing on three independent runways, increasing the airport’s capacity from 120 to 148 aircraft movements per hour.

This development will improve air traffic management, reduce delays, and lower carbon emissions. It supports İGA Istanbul’s goal of handling 200 million passengers annually and strengthens its position as a global aviation hub.

The process involved 500 air traffic controllers who completed 4,500 hours of training. The system uses advanced radar, A-CDM, and real-time data tools to optimize traffic flow. Collaboration with Turkish Airlines, Eurocontrol, and other aviation authorities ensured seamless integration, further enhancing Turkey’s role in global aviation.
