High in the cliffs of Amorgos stands a masterpiece, the monastery of Panagia Xozoviotissa.
One feels owe just by looking at it. The monastery is located over the crags of Profitis Ilias, 300 meters above sea level, south from the capital, Chora.
Many visitors wonder astonished, how could human hands have built this masterpiece? No wonder, also, why was a panoramic view included in the movie "Big Blue". The monastery stands out because of the plain white exterior, great view to the Aegean Sea and beautifully peaceful and serenely atmosphere.
The small chapel of the monastery has two inscribed icons of Mary that proclaim, as tradition has it, its descendant from Xozova or Xozovo in Palestine. Numerous friar cells, refectory, kitchen, ovens, cisterns and wells are all built inside the rock providing a soul resting scenery. The monastery's saint's day, on 21 November, is, as always, one of the most peaceful pilgrimages for Mary, but many people visit on August. Amorgos, the first fortnight in August, celebrates the monastery of Panagia Panoxoritisa, next to Lagkada traditional village, where one can have full view of the inland.
